Dollmaker’s Notebook | Waking the Edgewalker
There is something magical about creating faces.
I begin each doll by creating the medicine bundle that will become the heart of the doll. My second step is to create the face - which is when the spirit of the doll truly begins to show itself. It’s a bit like waking up from a long slumber. The spirit of the doll greets me as I work with the wool, following my intuition to bring the face into full relief.
When I first began making dolls, I felt so much anxiety around creating faces - but this has become one of my favorite parts of doll-making, because it feels a bit like meeting a new (old) friend!
