Creative projects and process

I breathe story and spirit into wool through the slow craft of needle felting.

As an intuitive fiber artist, I work with wool and other natural fibers, bones, and plant medicines to create one-of-a-kind spirit dolls & talismans. Though my primary craft is needle-felting, I’m also drawn to weaving, hand-stitching, and beadwork as forms of embodied ancestral remembering. For me, embracing these ancestral practices is deep spirit medicine. This slow, intentional handiwork opens a pathway to deeper ancestral connection and lineage healing.

Inspiration

I’m inspired by the Earth and the Ancestors, by vast oceans, deep tree roots, and mycelial networks.

I’m inspired by the seasons - the leaves that fall from the trees in Autumn and the tiny green sprouts that push through the last snow of winter.

I’m inspired by our ability to hold grief and joy simultaneously.

I’m inspired by the way we are pushed to the edge and reborn, again and again.

Remembering & Reweaving

My art explores themes of grief, loss, healing, ancestral connection, initiation, death, and rebirth.

For me, creativity is a spiritual practice.  As I work, I commune with Spirit and the Ancestors. I navigate the seen and unseen realms, weaving spirit into solid form. This is a process of (re)weaving, as I unravel old stories and create space for new truths to emerge.

As someone who often journeys into the dark, I’m called to create dolls to light the path. In this spirit, I craft dolls and talismans that can help facilitate personal and ancestral lineage healing, honor thresholds, and serve as illumination for underworld journeys. My work doesn’t turn away from difficult experiences or emotions, but invites you in deeper, encouraging you to journey into the dark and find the gifts hidden within. They are a reminder that no matter how long and dark the journey, we are never alone.

I’ve created dolls to hold many intentions, including ancestor work, honoring the midlife initiation into menopause, and carrying grief.

You can read more about my journey to dollmaking here.

My fiber art is meant to be held - both in hands and spirit. Each doll and talisman serves as a reminder and a compass, guiding me farther along the path of self-discovery. They are my companions on this journey - vessels to hold the intentions and medicines that will support me as I dive deep into the well of remembering.

Creating pathways for (re)connection

Exploring identity through art

I’m continually drawn to questions of identity and this is reflected in my work. As someone of mixed ancestry (my maternal lineage is Lingít & African and my paternal lineage is European), I have often struggled to find my place. In my art practice, I work with plants, animals, and stories that deepen my connection to my ancestors and strengthen my multicultural identity.

I believe that art is a form of reclamation. I recognize the role that colonization plays in personal and cultural identity loss and I create pathways for reconnection by crafting tangible objects with spiritual, ancestral, and cultural significance.

Plant spirits for ancestral connection

Each of my dolls contains a heart of intuitively chosen plant medicines. Some of the plant spirits I work with closely for ancestral connection include:

  • Yarrow

  • Mugwort

  • S’áxt (devil’s club)

  • Motherwort

  • Linden

  • Hawthorn

  • Calendula

  • Moss

  • Nettle

  • Kelp

  • Rose
